After three days of searching, a Moline funeral director has located a family member of the homeless man killed Monday.

Eric Trimble, of Trimble Pointe, found Robert Moldenhauer's ("The Can Man") brother, who is living in California.

Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson said the discovery of next of kin now has formalized funeral plans. Officials were hesitant to cremate Robert, just in case a family member later stepped forward to claim his remains.

Some Quad-Citians, mostly well-meaning, were attempting to arrange an open-casket visitation and other services. Some continue to try to raise money for Robert, despite the fact that all funeral expenses now are covered. Some local Facebook sites continued Wednesday to claim to be raising funds for Robert, despite being informed it is not necessary to do so. Beware.

Meanwhile, Robert's brother has indicated a preference for cremation and no funeral or church services.

"He was very confident his brother would not want a service," Reid Trimble said Wednesday, adding the Robert was a fiercely private man.

Meanwhile, it is likely the public will be invited to an informal interment gathering, probably at Riverside Cemetery, Moline.

Details are pending.
