It's one of those places that has been here so long, we stop seeing it.
The old Wonder Bread plant has been part of the East River Drive landscape in Davenport for 90 years.
Until 2005, thousands of loaves of bread, along with doughnuts and cakes, were made every week at the Hostess plant. When bankruptcy ended production, at least 100 Quad-Citians lost their jobs. But the plant remained a distribution center until 2010, making sure nearly a dozen area Hostess thrift stores had shelves full of goodies.
Today, the plant is barren. Demolition crews have removed tons of industrial equipment, including miles of conveyors.
A Davenport developer now is turning the "Twinkie factory" into loft housing with riverfront views.
Before the makeover, columnist Barb Ickes was given access for her continuing series, Off Limits Places. Be sure to pick up Sunday's paper to peek inside the plant.
