1. Mississippi Valley Fair
Talent shows, carnival rides and plenty of corn dogs are on the menu at the Mississippi Valley Fair, which kicks off Tuesday and runs through Sunday at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds, 2815 W. Locust St., Davenport. The schedule for grandstand concerts, which start at 8 p.m., is as follows: Dustin Lynch on Tuesday, Tyler Farr on Wednesday, Lynyrd Skynyrd on Thursday, Brett Eldredge on Friday, John Mellencamp on Saturday and Randy Houser on Sunday. To attend one or all of the grandstand concerts, you must purchase a Fun Card, which costs $60. Fun Cards are available at area Hy-Vee stores, area Great Southern Bank locations, as well as the fairgrounds office between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. A Fun Card includes access to the fair each day. General admission to the fair costs $10 per day for adults or $5 per day for kids ages 3-12. Kids younger than 3 get free admission. 2. Bix Jazz Fest
Jazz tunes will be filling the Quad-Cities this weekend during the 46th annual Bix Jazz Festival. For this year's fest, the main site of music is the Rhythm City Casino, 7077 Elmore Ave., Davenport. A weekend pass costs $105, a one-day pass costs $55 and a single session pass costs $30. The fest will also host six jazz bands at LeClaire Park in downtown Davenport from 5-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information and tickets, visit bixsociety.org.

3. Freedom Run 5k
The Quad-City Times Bix 7 may be over, but there's another running event on tap this week. The Freedom Run 5k, billed as a tribute and appreciation event for those who serve and served, is set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Participants can choose between a 1-mile, a 5k and a 5.8-mile loop. All races start and end on the 700 block of 15th Avenue in downtown East Moline. To register and for more information, visit freedomrun5k.org. Proceeds go toward the Association of the United States Army and USO Emergency Relief Grant Programs.

4. Jazz fest kick-off
To kick off the 46th Annual Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival, the Putnam Museum will hold a free concert featuring the Fat Babies, an eight-piece jazz band that plays classical styles of the 1920s and 30s. Band-member Andy Schumm will perform using Bix Beiderbecke’s iconic cornet, housed at the Putnam, during the show at the museum, 1717 W. 12th St., Davenport.

5. A trip to 'Sunset Boulevard'
Quad-City Music Guild opens its latest show, as part of its season of Broadway, this weekend. See "Sunset Boulevard," based on the 1950 movie by Billy Wilder, Thursday-Sunday at Prospect Park, 30th Ave., Moline. It also runs next weekend, Aug. 10-13. 8. A bright note
Mississippi Bend Players is wrapping up its inaugural season with a comedy. The new theater group opens "Brighton Beach Memoirs," Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical play that's set in Brighton Beach in Brooklyn, New York, this weekend at Augustana College's Brunner Theatre Center, 3750 7th Ave., Rock Island.
