The Bettendorf Public Works Department, in conjunction with National Public Works Week, and the Bettendorf Recycling Commission, will host its free annual “Public Works Day Open House and Recycling Fair” at the Maintenance Center, 4403 Devils Glen Road, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today. Free coffee, soda, popcorn, ice cream, hot dogs, and bratwurst will be provided. For more information, call 563-344-4088.

Public Works equipment will be on display, including garbage and recycling trucks, a sewer cleaning machine, street sweeper and loader. Visitors will learn about single-stream recycling, see how a traffic camera operates, and be able to check out the one-man patcher. Master Gardeners will also be available to provide gardening tips.

Other event activities include a hands-on backhoe operation, face-painting, and children can paint a snow plow blade. Mo Mallard, the Quad-City Mallards’ mascot will also be in attendance.

Attendees can register to win free bus passes and trash/yard waste stickers and free loose bulk compost will be given away. Residents should bring their own containers. There is a 35-gallon trash can limit.
