Coach: Stacy Zapolski
How do you train for the sport? "During the high school swim season I'm training with the team four mornings a week for 1½ hours, and five days a week in the afternoon for two hours. In the off-season, I train with the Piranhas Swim Club five times a week and run three miles three times a week. I also focus on having healthy balanced meals and drink lots of protein drinks while training."
What advice would you give people who want to join swim? "First have fun, swimming can be a lifelong healthy activity so make sure you are enjoying it. When competing, don't worry about the competition, focus on beating your personal best and the rest will come. Engage with the team, between the coaches and others swimmers there's a lot of tips to learn."
What are your post-high school plans? "I will be attending Iowa State University for mechanical engineering. I plan to participate in the swim club and the many great student organizations ISU has to offer."
Coach's reason for nomination: Austin spent a lot of time training in the off-season, which has shown in his fast times so far this fall," says coach Stacy Zapolski. "He quietly leads by example, working hard in the pool and in the weight room. He spends time after many practices working on his technique to help improve his times."
