It’s been a tough winter. If you managed to get through this season without getting sick, you’re lucky! But now that the worst of winter is (hopefully) over, let’s start thinking not just about avoiding or recovering from being sick, but getting healthier than we were when winter began.
The Bettendorf Public Library wants to help. In March, the library is hosting a series of programs called HealthPoints, with support from UnityPoint and the Bettendorf Public Library Foundation. You can learn how to maintain your health — not just physically but mentally, too.
Have you ever thought, “I need to get some exercise, but I don’t want to go to the gym”? What if we tell you that you can get a great workout without special equipment? Come and learn how on Saturday, March 10 at 2 p.m.
We’ve partnered with the Bettendorf Lions Club to offer Kidsight Vision Screenings on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, March 12, 13 and 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Get your young ones’ vision screened so any problems can be diagnosed and corrected early. Give your kids the best chance for good vision.
Teens can learn Hands Only CPR, Friday, March 16, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately receiving CPR by someone nearby. CPR especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.
Of course, we can’t talk health without talking nutrition. On Thursday, March 8, join us from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. for tips on heart healthy eating. Teens can learn about the nutrition needed to fuel their growing bodies on Thursday, March 15, from 11 a.m. to noon. And we’re partnering with the Hy-Vee dietitican on March 29, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the HyVee Club Room, 2900 Devils Glen Road in Bettendorf.
More programs will teach us about brain health, mental health, hand washing (for our younger patrons), yoga (for our adult patrons) and more. For a full listing of HealthPoints programs, go to www.bettendorflibrary.com. For some programs, space is limited. You can register at www.bettendorflibrary.com, by calling 563-344-4175 or at any Bettendorf Public Library service desk.
Living a healthy life will continue after the HealthPoints programs are over, as UnityPoint has generously sponsored the purchase of many items that the library will add to the collection about all areas of health, nutrition and fitness. Come see the items on display, take them home and continue improving your health year-round.
