Why was the student nominated? Mrs. Laurie Brasche, elementary principal at Cody Elementary School, wrote the following about Lucas after a service learning opportunity at her school: “It is not very often that you have someone [Lucas’] age who is so happy and kind and appropriate. He did face painting all day at Apple Fest. Three volunteers did not show up and that left him doing face painting all by himself (except for the hour when Mr. Hiatt was there). He spoke gently with the kids asking them about movies they have seen or what snacks they had had. His artistic skills are way cool. The parents were so impressed with him also. I even had a couple of the Lions Club members who were running the entrance table come and tell me that parents were talking about him as they left. He went above and beyond and likely left with a sore back for all the bending over little ones all day. He helped pick up and was willing and eager to help with some of the heavy lifting. What a gem!”
What makes you happy? "I enjoy working with animals, especially pit bulls because I’ve had pit bulls all my life, and they don’t deserve the bad reputation people give them."
What teacher has inspired you and why? "Mr. Marotta, my Earth science teacher, has inspired me the most because he’s helped me with my academics and football. He’s always available to talk and help me with anything. He’s a great teacher because he gets very involved with the students. He is always asking for feedback about his class, and he works with us to get the changes made to make the class better."
What is your reaction to honor? "I was surprised because it was out of nowhere. I wasn’t expecting it."
