Community volunteers will show up Sept. 11-15 to build a new Little Bear Park in Maquoketa, Iowa.

Sarah Johnston of the park committee said residents will be involved in building the structure at Second Ward Park, next to Briggs Elementary School. The existing Little Bear Park was built 20 years ago and will be torn down before the new construction.

Leathers and Associates of New York visited last month and did a preliminary design of the park with the help of Maquoketa grade-school students.

The committee has received a $25,000 donation from Maquoketa Community Services to build a “tot lot” for small children. Mike and Sheryl Hayes also have donated $500 in memory of their son, Brandon. Other donations will be accepted at Maquoketa City Hall. The city and Maquoketa Community Schools have pledged $75,000 each. The final cost for the park will be announced when the designs are completed.
