Location. Location. Location.

In a twist on the common mantra, owners of Carlos O’Kelly’s Mexican Cafe blame the location of the Davenport restaurant for a lack of business that has led to its closing.

Opened in 1998, the store at 1012 E. Kimberly Road, closed Monday, according to Dave Phillips, director of restaurant marketing for Sasnak Management of Wichita, Kan.

Phillips said while the company’s Moline restaurant is doing well, the Davenport location at the top of a hill off of East Kimberly Road was the main reason sales had dropped in recent years.

“The town’s traffic patterns, and the location have gotten worse and worse,” he said. “That is one factor that just pushed us over the edge. It is tough to get up that hill. Our numbers have been declining there. We knew it was not going to work in that particular spot.”

The Moline restaurant is at 3831 41st Ave. Drive. In all, Sasnak owns 41 Carlos O’Kelly’s in the Midwest. Sasnak also is a franchisee for Applebee’s restaurants in Illinois and Iowa, including two in Davenport and one in Moline.

Phillips said employees were informed Sunday night of the decision to close.

He said the company hopes to eventually find another Davenport site. But for now, the main focus will be placing employees at the Moline restaurant and the three Applebee’s locations.

“We will regroup,” he said. “We certainly hope to expand the concept. But for now, we want to relocate employees.”

Phillips said the Moline Carlos O’Kelly’s and the three Applebee’s stores, including a restaurant that opened a few years ago on West Kimberly Road in Davenport, are doing well.

Original story: After about 13 years at 1012 E. Kimberly Road, Davenport, Carlos O’Kelly’s Mexican Cafe has closed, company officials confirmed this morning.

Dave Phillips, director of restaurant marketing for Sasnak Management, Wichita, Kan., said the Davenport location closed Monday morning after employees were informed Sunday night. The Midwest restaurant chain continues to operate its other Quad-City store at 3831 41st Ave. Drive, Moline.

“We closed Davenport, but we are going to keep Moline opened,” Phillips said.

He said while Moline is doing well, the location at the top of a hill on East Kimberly Road was the main reason sales had dropped in recent years.

“The town’s traffic patterns and the location has gotten worse and worse,” he said. “That is one factor that just pushed us over the edge is the location. It is tough to get up that hill. Our numbers have been declining there. We knew it was not going to work in that particular spot.”

He said the company does hope to find another Davenport location to build. But for now, the main focus will be relocating employees to the Moline store and Sasnak’s three Applebee’s Quad-City restaurants.
