A Colona, Ill., man died Wednesday from from injuries during an early morning snowmobile crash in East Moline.

Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson identified the man as Donovan J. Stephens, 36.

The crash occurred at 1:43 a.m. on 12th Avenue North, just west of 193rd Street North.

The Rock Island County Sheriff’s Department said he was driving a snowmobile eastbound on 12th Avenue North when he lost control and entered the ditch on the north side of 12th Avenue North. The snowmobile then rolled over onto the driver.

Stephens was transported by ambulance to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash.

Gustafson said Stephens succumbed to neck and chest injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Rock Island County Sheriff’s Department.

Gustafson said Stephens was riding with a pack of other snowmobile riders around the time of the crash. He was in the rear when he lost control, and the crash initially was unknown to the other riders, Gustafson said.

“It’s a real tragic situation,” Gustafson said.

The name of the driver is being witheld pending notification of the family.
