A Davenport man is dead and a Milan, Ill., man is seriously injured after they were shot while sitting in a van in Davenport, officials said.
Albert E. Mayweathers, 31, died after he was shot in the 1100 block of Tremont Avenue shortly after 8 p.m. Monday. Darrius L. Brown, 38, remains hospitalized in serious condition.
Police believe a lone gunman is responsible for the crime. The men were shot while sitting near the intersection of 12th Street and Tremont. They then drove to an alley between Tremont and Arlington Avenue, where they got out of the van and collapsed on the ground.
The spot they were found is within feet of where police found a victim in another homicide eight years ago.
"We are working on some good leads at this point," said Capt. David Struckman, police spokesman. For example, police towed a vehicle they believe may have been involved in the crime.
According to police:
A man walked up to the van and shot into it through an open window. The suspect fled. The driver, who police declined to identify, drove the van into the alley and stopped in a parking spot for a nearby home.
Witnesses indicate the suspect used a handgun. An autopsy on Mayweathers is planned for Wednesday.
Police plan extra patrols in the neighborhood, which has seen its share of shootings in the past several years.
In 2001, Darrell Williams was shot at his home at 1118 Tremont Ave. Shon Graves entered the house and shot Williams seven times for allegedly stealing money from him. Williams fled the house but collapsed in the alley. Graves was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
In 2002, Casie Chrestensen shot her 13-month-old daughter, Chance, before taking her own life. They lived in an apartment at 1224 E. 11th St. That is about five blocks from Monday's shooting.
In 2005, rapper Jalon Thomas was shot and killed at 809 E. 13th St. Thomas was arguing in the street about a stolen dog with fellow rapper Ambus Davis. Davis shot Thomas in the chest and fled. Thomas made it to the back of the house before collapsing on a porch.
Davis was convicted of first-degree murder. He is serving a life sentence. That homicide was about three blocks from Monday's incident.
