Lindsey M. Brix appeared at her sentencing Thursday in Scott County District Court via video.
The 19-year-old Davenport woman accused of having indecent contact with a 12-year-old boy wasn't allowed out of the Scott County Jail because she was too distraught, District Judge Nancy Tabor said.
With her lawyer sitting beside her, an arm wrapped around her back, Brix pleaded for probation "till I can stand on my own feet."
Tabor refused and sentenced Brix to 10 years in prison. The judge combined two separate incidents from earlier this year, one involving the indecent contact in April and the other a theft on May 17.
While in custody at Scott County Jail since her arrest May 27, Brix has had numerous incidents of jail misconduct, has threatened other people and broken a window, Tabor said.
Even after pleading guilty earlier this month, Brix has continued to have problems at the jail, Tabor said.
"This community needs to be protected from your out-of-control behavior," Tabor told Brix.
According to a Davenport Police Department complaint, Brix had sex with a 12-year-old boy while they were under a bridge in the 300 block of South Clark Street, Davenport. The incident occurred about 3 p.m. April 1.
Upon being released from prison, Brix will have to register as a sex offender for 10 years.
Tabor said she was "troubled" by Brix's actions with the child. Brix also was involved with known gang members and developed addictions to drugs and alcohol, the judge said.
Defense attorney Lori Kieffer-Garrison called her client a "first-time offender" who has been in and out of mental health institutions since she was 13.
Brix suffered abuse by "ones she trusted," Tabor said. The abuse was not explained in court.
"You've had a very sad upbringing," Tabor said. "You certainly were not dealt the best hand."
After the sentencing, a man and a woman who identified themselves as Brix's parents declined to be interviewed. They sat on a bench outside the Scott County Jail, waiting to talk to their daughter.
