A retired Wilson Middle School teacher was in the Rock Island County Jail on a $150,000 bond Wednesday after police say he sexually abused a 13-year-old student in 2010.

Henry D. Pawlus, 66, of Coal Valley, is charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse and criminal sexual assault.

Pawlus taught in the district for 15 years and retired as an industrial education instructor in May 2010.

Moline-Coal Valley Superintendent David Moyer said in a news release that he became aware of Pawlus' arrest late Wednesday afternoon.

Moyer said he could not comment on the investigation but said the district is cooperating with police.

"The district extends its sympathy to all victims of sexual assault and is committed to providing a safe environment for its students," Moyer said in the release.

Moyer added that all personnel will be notified of Pawlus' arrest and will be prepared to assist those who need support.

Pawlus was arrested after a four-month investigation by Moline police.

Police say Pawlus sexually abused a 13-year-old girl at the middle school in January 2010.
