A Davenport man abused his 3-week-old son, causing a head injury and broken bones, police said.

Peter J. Ranke, 29, of 2503 Tremont Ave., was arrested Tuesday and charged with child endangerment, multiple acts, a felony.

Police began a child abuse investigation after officers were called to Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street, Davenport, at 1 p.m. Nov. 5 for an infant who was brought to the emergency room suffering a subdural hematoma, a broken clavical and possible rib fractures, according to Ranke’s arrest affidavit. A subdural hematoma is when a collection of blood appears on the surface of the brain.

Police said the child’s injuries were consistent with abuse, the affidavit states.

Police did not release information about the child’s condition Tuesday. Davenport Assistant Police Chief Don Schaeffer said the Iowa Department of Human Services was notified.

Police said Ranke had been caring for the child on Nov. 5 and for three weeks prior at his home, the affidavit states.

Ranke engaged in three or more acts of child endangerment, including at least one act that resulted in serious injury, the affidavit states.

The boy was born to Peter and Jennifer Ranke Oct. 12 at Genesis BirthCenter, Davenport, according to hospital records. The couple also have a daughter born in 2009, hospital records state.
