A Davenport man abused his 3-week-old son, causing a head injury and broken bones, police said.

Peter J. Ranke, 29, of 2503 Tremont Ave., was arrested Tuesday and charged with child endangerment, multiple acts, a felony.

Police began a child abuse investigation after officers were called to Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street, Davenport, at 1 p.m. Nov. 5 for an infant who was brought to the emergency room suffering a subdural hematoma, a broken clavical and possible rib fractures, according to Ranke’s arrest affidavit. A subdural hematoma is when a collection of blood appears on the surface of the brain.

Police said the child’s injuries were consistent with abuse, the affidavit states.

Police did not release information about the child’s condition Tuesday. Davenport Assistant Police Chief Don Schaeffer said the Iowa Department of Human Services was notified.

Police said Ranke had been caring for the child on Nov. 5 and for three weeks prior at his home, the affidavit states.

Ranke engaged in three or more acts of child endangerment, including at least one act that resulted in serious injury, the affidavit states.

The boy was born to Peter and Jennifer Ranke Oct. 12 at Genesis BirthCenter, Davenport, according to hospital records. The couple also have a daughter born in 2009, hospital records state.

Kinda hard to believe that only one of the two children were mistreated. Get real!! Why pick one? This man is SICK!! I also have to believe the mother is not capable or deserving of raising any child! She needs to be checked, mentally. She chose to stay with an abusive creep, at the risk of her own offspring. Twisted minds ruining the hope in life for small children....sad. They will mimic the parents behavior later in life, unless someone intervenes NOW!!

who do you think took the child to the hospital... the mother! as a mother working or not it is impossible to have your eyes on a child 24/7... when would you sleep, when would you shower, think about it. who's to say the mother didnt notice something was wrong and was calling the doctor. have you been around a baby with a broken bone? I have! my best friends 4 year old son fell on her 6 month old son and broke his arm... no one knew for a few weeks it was broken. the baby didn't cry like you think, it just favored certain positions, and there was no bruise. besides if the mother was there and did know in this situation, dont you think DHS would have her arrested also? and why take the child away from the mother when she did nothing wrong!? yes thow the book at this man, i agree! he abused his new born, lied to his wife about it, lied to doctors, police, family! but do not put down the wife/mother when you don't know the story! use common sense... the story didnt say the mom was involved or arrested so have respect for her and her family!

Where was the mother during all of this? Even if she worked outside the home, I would think that she would notice the injuries. What about the little girl? Did she have any signs of abuse? Hope the baby recovers, hope both children are taken away to loving homes where they are treated like a king and queen, and I hope that the book is thrown at this guy.
