Nine of the top high school show choirs from around Iowa and Minnesota will be at Davenport North High School on Saturday for The Big Dance, one of the Midwest’s premier invitational show choir competitions.
The 16th annual event at North’s Paul J. Holzworth Auditorium will begin with a preliminary competition from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The finals competition begins at 7:30 p.m.
Among the schools competing are Davenport Central, Davenport West, Cedar Rapids Prairie, Waukee (Iowa) and Totino Grace High School of Fridley, Minn.
In addition, there will be exhibition performances from the host school’s own show choirs, Northside Establishment and Center Stage.
Admission is $12 for adults, $7 for children and senior citizens.
Show choir competitions featuring singing, choreographed dancing and eye-catching costumes have gained popularity around many parts of Iowa and some bordering states. There are Saturday competitions in eastern Iowa on a regular basis from the middle of January through mid-March, and all three of the public high schools in Davenport as well as Bettendorf have strong groups.
And if Saturday’s event at North whets your appetite for more, there’s another big one coming Feb. 15-16 when West and Central host the annual Great River Show Choir Invitational at the Adler Theatre in Davenport.
