A plan to renovate the former Kahl nursing home in Davenport into senior citizen apartments is still alive after the building owners agreed this week to extend until Dec. 31 a developer's option to buy the property.

The building at 1101 W. 9th St. is owned by Carmelite System Inc., of Germantown, N.Y., and its board agreed to the extension, Rosalie Thomas, administrator of the new Kahl Home in northeast Davenport, said.

The previous option was contingent on the developers securing financing in March from the Iowa Finance Authority, but the application for affordable housing tax credits — a key piece of the proposed $9.4 million project — was turned down.

Backers of the project are pursuing a different combination of financing options, Chris Ales, consultant to the developer, said.

The former nursing home, a fixture in the community for 60 years, has been vacant since the summer of 2012 when the Kahl moved to its new location. Nearby residents are interested in seeing the building reoccupied with a neighbor-friendly use.

I believe the unnamed developer is Chris Ayles who was responsible for the Marycrest debacle that resulted in dozens of mechanics liens against him for not paying his contractors.
