DeWITT, Iowa — The Iowa State Fire Marshal is calling the cause of a Mother's Day fire in DeWitt as undetermined, but not suspicious.

DeWitt Fire Chief Bob Sandry said the fire marshal determined the fire started in the front northwest corner of the porch but not exactly what started it.

Sandry said the home is destroyed.

The family, Jessie Smith and her two children, were not home at the time. The American Red Cross is assisting the family. Donations may be made by calling the Gateway Chapter of the Red Cross at 563-242-5223.

Sandy said the family was not home at the time of the fire. Two family dogs died in the blaze.

When firefighters arrived, reports indicate the home was engulfed in flames.

Welton and Grand Mound fire departments assisted.
