A Bettendorf School Board meeting to approve a construction bid for the new Grant Wood Elementary School in Bettendorf passed without comment from the public Monday.
Finance Director Dallon Christensen said the public session, required by law, lasted about two minutes. No one spoke either for or against building the $16.7 million school.
This is in sharp contrast to the past. Planning for the project traces back to November 2015, when Bettendorf organized its Elementary Facilities Advisory Committee. Bettendorf is wrestling with the need for more classroom space in the land-locked district that is nine square miles in size.
The board voted 4-3 on Feb. 1 to build the new school at the site, located at 1423 Hillside Drive, Bettendorf.
Next steps in the process are to open and approve construction bids, Christensen said.
Earthwork has been going on, as well as site grading to ready the area for construction. It is located adjacent to the present elementary school.
Estes Construction, Davenport, is the construction manager and Legat Architects, Moline, are the architects.
It's hoped the school will be ready in time to open for the 2018-19 school year, Christensen said.
