CLINTON — A fire in a truck garage at a Clinton food industry recycling plant caused an estimated $500,000 in damages on Wednesday, according to Clinton Fire Department Battalion Chief Frederick Roling.
Firefighters were dispatched to Darling International Inc., 1423 Beaver Channel Parkway, for a structure fire in a truck garage building, Roling said.
The first firefighters on the scene reported heavy smoke pouring from the building.
The first team of firefighters that went into the building had to retreat due to all the vehicles in the garage and the heavy smoke, Roling said.
Firefighters then attacked the fire from outside the building. The fire was brought under control in about 90 minutes.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Roling said.
The Darling International plant was formerly operated by National By-Products.
Darling International Inc. has its headquarters in Irving, Texas. According to the company’s website, it is a provider of rendering, recycling and recovery solutions to the nation’s food industry. It has facilities throughout the United States, including 10 in Iowa.
