DELMAR, Iowa - Corn was damaged in fire at a grain drying bin Thursday morning at the AgVantage FS elevator in Delmar.

Delmar Fire Chief Dick Schneden said flames were coming from the grain bin when employees noticed the fire just after 8 a.m. at 502 Main St. When firefighters arrived, there were no longer any flames and the dryer had been shut down.

Schneden said because of the height of the bin, the Maquoketa Fire Department was called to bring its aerial truck. The Charlotte Fire Department was called for mutual aid, and Welton firefighters were asked to stand by at their station.

"The aerial was used to look in the top of the dryer, but they couldn't see any fire," Schneden said. "They didn't use any water on it."

AgVantage employees began emptying the dryer from the bottom. Schneden said they hauled out some burnt corn, but couldn't say how much was destroyed. "It wasn't that much," the chief said.

Schneden said the cause of the fire is unknown. He said company employees told him they turned on the dryers about 20 minutes before they saw the flames.
