A fire Monday in the 1200 block on 11th Street in Rock Island damaged two apartments, authorities said. Nobody was injured.

Firefighters were called shortly before 10 a.m. to 1201 11th St.

A resident of a first-floor apartment woke to the sound of smoke detectors going off upstairs and went there to find an apartment filled with smoke. Firefighters arrived to find flames coming from a window of the second-floor apartment. They got it under control within minutes, but the apartment sustained an estimated $5,000 damage, Rock Island Battalion Chief Paul Hoffeditz said.

The American Red Cross of the Quad-Cities Area was helping the residents with accommodations Monday, as well as food and clothing needs. Two families are being helped, one with two adults and three children and another with two adults.

The cause of the fire was still being investigated.
