The highest-ranking officer on Arsenal Island will be relinquishing his command later this month and will move to a new assignment.

The First Army headquarters on the island said Monday that Lt. Gen. Mick Bednarek will transfer his duties and responsibilities March 14 to Maj. Gen. Kevin Wendel, who will serve as acting commander until a permanent replacement is appointed by the Army.

Wendel commands the First Army Division East at Fort Meade, Md.

The ceremony will take place on the Arsenal and be presided over by Gen. David Rodriguez, commanding general for the U.S. Army Forces Command.

Bednarek led the transition of First Army’s headquarters from Fort Gillem, Ga., to the Arsenal. The change was ordered by the 2005 base realignment and closure process. It was completed in 2011. Bednarek has been selected to be the chief of the security cooperation office in Baghdad, Iraq. He’ll report to the U.S. ambassador there.

First Army trains, advises and assists reservists prior to and after mobilization.
