Rose Hershberger has lived in other apartments, but nothing compared with her new home at The Taylor Renaissance senior living apartments at 901 W. 15th St., Davenport.

Chicago developer RRG Development Inc. will host an open house at 11 a.m. today to show off the results of a year of renovation work at the former Taylor School, which closed in 1978.

“The thing I like the most is I never had a full-size kitchen,” Hershberger, one of five residents of the complex, said Wednesday. “Every apartment has a fireplace and all the materials are high quality. I am very happy. I hate moving so I am hoping I can stay here a long time.”

She and her dog, Sammy, moved in May 27.

Built in 1897, the four-story, 30,000-square-foot brick former school and an addition recently constructed  have a total of 41 units. It offers senior housing and independent living options for residents 55 and older based on certain income requirements.

“Davenport and the Quad-Cities embraced our adaptive re-use and rehabilitation project that now re-turns purpose to an incredibly beautiful building,” said Nancy J. Kapp, president of RRG, and one of the owners. Other owners are Jeanmarie Kapp, who serves as chief financial officer, and Colleen James, senior vice president.

The trio has developed numerous successful senior living centers in Chicago since 1985. The Taylor Renaissance project was its first outside the Chicago area. The company stepped in after a previous developer ran into financing difficulties in late 2009.

Renaissance used a construction loan, funds from both the Iowa Finance Authority and National Equity Fund as well as Davenport HOME funds to complete the project, at a cost previously reported at $11 million.

There are one- and two-bedroom units, with layout options and multiple closets plus separate storage space. Dogs are welcome. Full kitchens feature maple cabinets and Energy-Star appliances. The 41 units include 17 in the renovated school building and 24 in the addition.

The 20 one-bedroom apartments rent from $437 to $599; 21 two-bedroom units rent from $543 to $650.

Open house viewing is available 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Appointments also can be scheduled by calling (563) 323-0901 or online at
