Genesis Health System and ACAP Health Consulting have announced a partnership to try to decrease obesity and metabolic syndrome rates across the country.
The two organizations will take ACAP Health’s obesity and metabolic syndrome reversal program, Naturally Slim, directly to health care systems throughout the United States.
The program is delivered online and through a mobile app. It most often is made available to employees as part of their employer-sponsored health insurance package.
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors that can lead to a 700 percent increase in serious conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Each year, employers pay approximately 60 percent more in health insurance claims for employees with metabolic syndrome than those without.
Genesis has used the program within its health care plan and found it improved the health of employees and their spouses, reduced employees health care premiums, and saved the company millions of dollars in health care costs as an employer, according to Doug Cropper, president and CEO.
Through the partnership, Genesis Health System and ACAP Health will begin a campaign that will raise awareness of the program within other health systems across the country.
“So many health care providers are desperately searching for ways to protect their patients from the chronic physical conditions related to obesity. Our plan is to begin by making them aware of a proven solution that has worked for nearly 10 years within our own Genesis employee population,” Stacia Carroll, health promotion manager for Genesis Health System, said in a news release. “We’re encouraging health systems to start by offering Naturally Slim to their own employees, who often neglect their own health while serving others.”
