MAQUOKETA, Iowa – A gold coin with an estimated value of $1,800 was found in a Salvation Army kettle here.

Salvation Army officials said someone dropped in a $50 Canadian Maple Leaf gold coin weighing one ounce at the Salvation Army kettle Friday at Walmart in Maquoketa.

The large gold coin was housed in a plastic case similar to those used by collectors. A $1 bill was taped to the outside of the coin. Value of the coin is estimated between $1,600 and $1,800.

Sue Sandberg, a volunteer for the Maquoketa Ministerial Association who coordinates the kettle program, said Monday it’s the first time a gold coin has been dropped in the kettle in Maquoketa.

“An anonymous donor has helped to make the holidays a bit brighter in Maquoketa,” Sam Sandberg, a volunteer, said.
