A familiar face at Davenport City Council meetings is looking for a new place to sit.
Dale Gilmour, a small business owner and regular attendee of city and ward meetings, has announced he is running to become the next 6th Ward alderman.
"I have probably attended more City Council meetings than anyone on the current council, with the possible exception of (4th Ward) Alderman Ray Ambrose," Gilmour said. "If you have ever seen a newscast that pans the audience, you have seen me there."
Gilmour is a lifelong resident of Davenport and has owned and operated Best Distributing Inc. for the past 25 years.
With his knowledge of city government and the relationships he has cultivated with current council members and staff, Gilmour thinks "there would be no learning curve."
Gilmour has stressed the need for appropriate planning when economic development opportunities come along.
"I'm all for planned economic development, but I have seen growth without what seems to be appropriate planning," Gilmour said. "Too often, a development project will be approved without consideration of how traffic will be affected."
With the City Council currently considering an ordinance for rezoning a property for a proposed Costco Wholesale location, Gilmour said its development will have an effect on the two thoroughfares accessing the Elmore Avenue corridor.
"Add in a Costco on 53rd, and the traffic problems could become critical," Gilmour said. "We need to address these traffic problems now, rather than after the development occurs."
Emphasizing the need for clear and open communication, Gilmour has vowed to regularly schedule ward meetings, which has not occurred for some time in the 6th Ward.
