The Government Bridge swing span malfunctioned and could not close in order to allow vehicle traffic, the Rock Island Arsenal announced Monday morning.
A hydraulic cylinder on the swing span was not operating, according to a news release issued by Eric Cramer, Garrison public affairs officer for the Arsenal.
The bridge's web cam showed the span closed by late afternoon Monday, but no further information was available. Monday morning, crews were working on repairs, and officials did not have an estimate on how long repairs would take. The bridge will remain closed to vehicular traffic until repairs are complete.
On Friday and Saturday, the U.S. Army Garrison at the Rock Island Arsenal will make repairs on the bridge, according to the City of Davenport. Signs will be placed to inform traffic. A flagger will be on-site Friday.
- From 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday, repair work will require intermittent, single lane closures.
- From 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday, repair work will require the bridge to be closed to all traffic.
The downstream sidewalk will remain open throughout the duration of the work on both days, but the upstream sidewalk will be closed.
