ALEDO, Ill. — If he is convicted of a felony, Mercer County Treasurer Mike Bertelsen would be removed from office, a special prosecutor says.

Michael Vujovich of the State’s Attorney’s Appellate Prosecutor’s Office provided that information after Bertelsen’s preliminary hearing this week in Mercer County Circuit Court.

Bertelsen, 53, of Aledo faces a Class 3 felony theft charge accusing him of taking $800 from the Mercer County Republican Party.

Illinois State Police special agent Ryan Tone testified at Tuesday’s preliminary hearing that a more detailed look by party officials indicates that more money is missing, but he declined to elaborate on the amount.

Bertelsen was arrested in late August and is free on $20,000 bond. He returned to work last week and is currently in his fifth term as treasurer.

Probable cause was found to move the case to trial. A date has not been scheduled. Bertelsen has pleaded not guilty to the charge.
