Some worshippers in Davenport spent Sunday morning at their own church and then called on their neighbors. Six historic Davenport Hilltop Churches opened their doors for an “altar crawl” event from 1-5 p.m. Sunday to showcase the historic architecture of these congregations with roots deep in the 19th century. Five of the six churches are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The churches include Bethel A.M.E. Church, 323 W. 11th St.; First Christian Church, 510 E. 15th St.; First Presbyterian Church, 1702 Iowa St.; St. John’s United Methodist Church, 109 E. 14th St.; Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 121 W. 12th St. The event was sponsored by the Hilltop Campus Village, whose goals include creating a revitalized, mixed-use neighborhood that is family-friendly, safe, diverse and alive with activities.
