The Moline Fire Department on its Facebook page is warning residents to be alert to flash flooding from ice jams on the Rock River in Moline. Flooding was affecting areas east of 27th Street.

Firefighters are on scene monitoring river levels as the water levels are currently rising.

A crew from the National Weather Service was sent to observe the area this morning and is reporting minor flooding upstream from the I-74 bridge, said Mike McClure, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service.

Just how fast and how high the Rock will rise is uncertain at this point, McClure said.

In addition a NWS flood warning has just been issued for the Rock River in the Quad-Cities until 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Sudden fluctuations in the river level are possible including downstream locations where flooding is not currently occurring. Some locations that will experience flooding include Moline, Coal Valley and the Quad-City International Airport, the warning stated.

A flood warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. All interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately.

The Moline Police Department also adds that the ice jams that are being formed along the Rock River near the Interstate 74 bridge is causing river levels to rise along the river.

Rock Island County Emergency Management has been notified and barriers are being readied in the event they are needed. Rock Island County Emergency Management Agency and the City of Moline have an Incident Action Plan in place ready to implement.

The City of Moline Public Works also is monitoring the situation and on standby to assist.

The Rock Island County Sheriff’s Department is reminding everyone who lives along the river to monitor river levels and be prepared to evacuate quickly if the situation worsens. Planning ahead by packing a bag of clothes, essential medications, and pets will ease any evacuations if the river levels continue to rise.

Residents who live along the Rock River should monitor the National Weather Service website for changes in the river levels.
