The Illinois State Police have released the name of a semi-truck driver who was killed early Sunday on Interstate 80 between Geneseo and Atkinson, Ill.
Sean K. Fergeson, 47, of Everett, Wash., was killed when his vehicle hit the back of a semi-truck parked westbound along I-80, two miles east of Geneseo, Trooper Jason Wilson said.
The accident happened at 4:47 a.m. when one semi-truck with a driver and co-driver inside was pulled off the road because of mechanical problems. Fergeson's vehicle, which also was westbound, struck the rear of the first truck, police said.
Fergeson was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two drivers were in the cab of the their semi, but they were uninjured, Wilson said.
"The one semi was off to the side, was broken down, and had its four-way flashers and reflective signals displayed," Wilson said. "The other semi crossed over onto the shoulder and struck the parked semi."
He said both semis contained some type of food as their cargo.
Wilson said an autopsy is to be scheduled by Henry County Coroner Dave Johnson.
The westbound lanes of I-80 between Atkinson and Geneseo were closed for almost 12 hours until one lane was reopened about 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
