A congressman's longtime support for afterschool programs will be recognized in Davenport today at a school with a full-service program.
Madison Elementary School, Davenport, is the award site. U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack, a Democrat from Iowa City, will receive the "Friend of Afterschool" award from the Iowa Afterschool Alliance.
Loebsack was a member of the education and workforce committee for eight years in the U.S. House and is a strong supporter of funding for afterschool programs.
Madison received a grant from the 21st Century Community Learning Center, and the money has allowed Madison to serve more than 65 students a day, up from 15 students daily, according to a media release from Davenport schools. The school principal is Steve Mielenhausen, a Principal of the Year Award-winner for his efforts in this area.
Loebsack supports 21st Century Learning Centers and said they are part of the "Every Child Succeeds" legislation.
"I did everything I could to fund that bill," he said Wednesday.
Loebsack's wife is a retired elementary school teacher, so he understands the value of afterschool programs, he said.
At Madison, for example, the afterschool program integrates academic enrichment in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, intervention assistance or help with homework. The children also receive healthy food and snacks.
"These programs are complete no-brainers," Loebsack said. "It's a great program."
