Hostess plant

Until November 2005, the former Interstate Bakeries Corp., now Hostess Brands Inc., had baking operations at the Wonder Bread plant on East River Drive in Davenport. It then became a distribution center, which Hostess Brands closed in August 2010. Plans are to turn it into a mixed-use building, including loft apartments.

For next Sunday's Big Story, I'm continuing our Off Limits Places series with a tour of the former Hostess plant on East River Drive in Davenport.

Although frequently dubbed "The Twinkie Factory," the golden, cream-field sponge cakes never were made there. For most of its life, the plant primarily made cakes, doughnuts and bread: Wonder Bread.

The old plant now is getting new life as an apartment building with truly great Mississippi River views.

On the plant tour, I took along a 44-year employee who worked there until 2012 — even after the distribution operation had closed.

Many more Quad-Citians have memories of the plant, and I would love to include some in the upcoming Big Story.

Please send your recollections to me via email, bickes@qctimes.com. If you prefer snail mail, our address is 500 E. 3rd St., Davenport, Iowa, 52801.
