MAQUOKETA, Iowa — No injuries were reported after the 300 block of South Eliza was evacuated for a couple of hours Thursday night, when some workers hit a gas line in the area.

Assistant Chief Craig Jackson said a crew putting in fiber optic line "nicked" a gas line in the right of way in front of 306 S. Eliza about 5:40 p.m. Thursday.

He said that about 6 p.m., most of the 300 block of South Eliza had been evacuated. Residents returned to their homes about 90 minutes later.

There were no injuries and no fire. Maquoketa Fire Department was called to stand by.

Gas crews worked until about 9 p.m. repairing the leak and making sure there were no other leaks in the area.
