A new race/walk sponsored by Mel Foster Co. will blast runners and walkers with bursts of color powder this summer while raising money for two local organizations.

The Quad-City real estate firm is the presenting sponsor of Color the Quads 5K and Kids Color Dash. The event is planned for June 1 at Cumberland Square, 2300 Spruce Hills Drive, Bettendorf.

Kris Ratigan, Mel Foster’s marketing director, said the race is a spin-off of The Color Run, which is held in the nation’s large metropolitan cities.

Ratigan said runners are instructed to dress in white because they will be covered in colored powders at the starting line and at different locations during the course. Each participant will receive a packet of color — made from cornstarch and food dye — to throw in the air at the starting line.

“By the time they are done, they’ll be covered in color from head to toe,” she said, adding that the powder is 100 percent biodegradable and safe.

Color the Quads and the Kids Color Dash will be held at different times on June 1. The kids’ dash — for children 2-7 years old — will be at 9 a.m. The adult 5K will begin at 4 p.m. All participants will be invited to an after-party.

Early registration fee for the 5K is $30 until Feb. 1, $35 until April 1 and $40 until May 27. The fee includes race entry, T-shirt and swag bag. The Kids Color Dash cost is $15 until April 1 and $20 until May 27.

The 2013 Color the Quads benefits two local organizations, the Scott County Family Y Youth Solutions and Camp Abe Lincoln programs, and the Children’s Therapy Center of the Quad-Cities.

Ratigan said Color the Quads will replace Mel Foster’s Putt for Charity, which it has organized as a benefit for the past few years. In November, Putt for Charity raised $15,000 for the Humility of Mary.

“We were ready for something different,” she said, adding that a similar race has been in Des Moines.

Early sponsors include Mel Foster Co.; Orthopaedic Specialists PC; Pear Advertising; Terrostar; Vollertsen, Britt & Gorsline P.C.; Radon Solutions; Valley Bank, Hawkeye Paving; Active Endeavors; Nelson Chiropractic; Plaza Physical Therapy, and Quad-Cities Sports Acceleration. Additional sponsors and volunteers are being sought.
