While the turkeys are roasting, you can get a head start on working off the big feast by participating Thursday morning in the 25th annual McCarthy-Bush/Scott County Family Y Turkey Trot.

The 1-mile family fun run and 5-mile run/walk will benefit the YMCA Youth Development and Healthy Living scholarship programs.

Both events begin at the Scott County Family Y, 606 W. 2nd St., Davenport. The 1-mile family fun run and walk begins at 8:30 a.m. and the 5-mile run/walk at 9 a.m. The longer route goes up Main Street to VanderVeer Botanical Park and back to the Y.

Race-day registration will be available from 6:30-8 a.m. for $32 for the 1-mile and $37 for the 5-mile.

New aspects this year are a stroke awareness group wearing special green T-shirts and a local school challenge in which any school that brings 100 or more participants to the Turkey Trot will receive a pool party at the Bettendorf Y.

The race route will be closed until 11 a.m., with only one lane of Harrison and Brady streets and Central Park Avenue will be closed on the portion of the route around Vander Veer.
