MOLINE — Carol Ann (Coulter) Johnson died suddenly on November 26 in Florida. Carol Ann Coulter was born on October 3, 1934, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Robert W. and Delight D. (Southern) Coulter. She grew up in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, attending Wauwatosa High School until her junior year, when the family was transferred to Moline. After graduating from Moline High School, she attended the University of Illinois, where she was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority and Shi Ai Honorary Society. She married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Lee Johnson, in September 1954. While Tom was employed by John Deere & Company, the family lived in Dubuque and Ottumwa, Iowa, as well as Moline.
Carol later continued her education, receiving a liberal arts degree from Western Illinois University. She was employed as a library assistant in the East Moline, Ottumwa, Iowa, and Moline school systems. In 1980, she received her real estate license and enjoyed over 25 years as a successful Realtor in Illinois, Iowa and Florida.
Carol enjoyed many volunteer functions and organizations such as Junior Service League, King’s Daughters, Hospital Auxiliary, Tri City Pan-Hellenic (past president) and worked several PGA golf tournaments. Her greatest joy of volunteerism was the John Deere Classic. She held the position of Transportation Co-Chair for well over 25 years. While living in Ottumwa, Carol became very active in Republican politics, serving as a county chair for then-Gov. Robert Ray. She was appointed by Gov. Ray to the Judicial Nominating Commission for the State of Iowa and appeared for confirmation before the Senate.
Carol was a long time member of First Congregational Church of Moline.
She enjoyed traveling, playing tennis and golf well into her 80s. After retirement, she and Tom enjoyed spending their summers in East Moline and winters in Atlantis, Fla.
The greatest joy of her life was her family. She was so proud of her son and two daughters, as well as her 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband and children, Steven Lee Johnson (Molly) of Conway, S.C., Jayne Southern Johnson Grissom (Vic) of Prague, Okla., and Lisa Carol Johnson (Marisa) of Portland Ore., as well as many adored and cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
As per her wishes, Carol will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Her family is requesting that her many friends send short stories of how she touched their lives. These will be compiled and shared with her family. Please send to the home address in Florida or to her email address (which will remain active). In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Congregational Church of Moline.
