ROCK ISLAND - Gaylord Archer passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at age 86.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at Rafferty Funeral Home, 2111-1st St. A, Moline, with visitation from 11 a.m. to the service. Burial will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials can be made to City Archeology Society, Veterans' Assistance Program, and U.P. Trinity Hospice.
Born in Helena, Montana, on March 2, 1932, and moving to the Midwest as a child, Gaylord was a graduate of Muscatine High School and University of Iowa, earning a degree in Forensic Speech. Gaylord served in the United States Army Air Corps during the Korean Conflict in the European corridor from 1952-1954. He was an associate of Arrow Realty and Construction Company of Davenport, a family business. He retired from JC Penney after 30 years as a Warehouse Manager.
Armchair archeologist, literature aficionado and oral historian, Gaylord and Connie traveled and camped throughout the U.S., and for one year taught English as a second language in Hungary, taking side trips throughout their tenure. Lover of animals, and friend to all, everyone appreciated his affable nature and easy manner.
He leaves behind wonderful memories with his wife of 48 years, Connie; his two stepchildren, Michael Donovan and Anne Donovan Heneghan, and granddaughters, Chelsea and Katie Donovan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gaylord Archer and Ruth Groth Archer, brothers Ernest and Paul, and sister Ester.
His surviving brother John Archer resides in Iowa City.
