BETTENDORF — George “Handyman” Handy was born July 26, 1950, in Memphis, Tenn., to parents, George Handy Sr. and Mattie McCauley Handy. Handyman was stricken with multiple myeloma about two years ago and he fought courageously to beat it.

Handyman lost his courageous battle on Jan. 14, 2014, at St. Francis Hospice Home, Peoria, Ill., and will be cremated at Cremation Society of Mid-Illinois, Pekin, Ill. Handyman is survived by his daughter, Tequila Coleman Shelvin, Sugarland, Texas; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; his brother, Jimmy Handy, North Chicago; and two half-siblings, Mary Biggers, Memphis, and David West Handy, San Francisco; and many friends. Handyman loved to play his bass guitar and work on people’s vehicles. A celebration of life will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Muddy Waters, 1708 State St., Bettendorf, with a jam in his honor following.
