WILTON, Iowa - Richard L. Garrison, age 71, of Wilton, Iowa, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at Trinity Health Systems, Bettendorf.

Richard was born April 27, 1941, to Leo and Ellen (Moore) Garrison in Muscatine. He graduated from Muscatine High School. Growing up in Muscatine, he worked at Soltwedel's Greenhouse filling pots and picking tomatoes from the time he was six years old. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Security Agency. He married Karen J. Bicknese on April 10, 1961, in Wilton.

Richard and Karen owned Garrison's Garden Market and Greenhouses in Wilton. He loved the greenhouses, especially growing tomatoes in early spring.

Richard served on the Wilton City Council for 32 years. He was a member of the Wilton Chamber of Commerce, WDIC and the Wilton Library Committee. He enjoyed working on council projects, always trying to improve Wilton, the town he loved. He gained a love of traveling when he was stationed in Ethiopia, Africa, and loved traveling to the Carribean, Costa Rica, Mexico and Belize, to name a few.

He enjoyed playing Santa Claus for the Wilton window walk, which he did for many years.

Visitation will be held on Monday, Dec. 17, 2012, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Bentley Funeral Home, Wilton. Additional visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at United Methodist Church, Wilton.

Services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Wilton.

Interment will take place at the Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 51 years, Karen of Wilton; his sisters, Juanita West of Muscatine; JoAnn and her husband, Charles Lutrel, of Letts, Iowa; Rozita Bergen of Denmark, Iowa; Leola Garner of Columbus Juction, Iowa; and Charlene Cozad of Muscatine; his brothers, William and his wife, Nancy Phillips, of West Liberty, Iowa; Leo and his wife, Barb Garrison, of Marshalltown, Iowa; and Tony and his wife, Mary Garrison, of Wapello, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jeffrey Garrison; and his sisters, Mary McGourty, Jackie Brown and Roberta McCormick.

A memorial has been established in his memory.
