ROCK ISLAND — Wallace C. "Wally" Seyb, 93 of Rock Island, died Friday, March 17, 2017, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Knox Chapel of Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 2106 7th Ave., Rock Island. Visitation is 10 a.m. until service time Friday. Burial will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246. Memorials may be made to the Iowa City Ronald McDonald House.
Wally was born at home Nov. 18, 1923, in Rock Island, a son of Raymond and Myrtle Bartell Seyb. He married Shirley Kennedy Lund on Sept. 5, 1951, in Port Byron. She died Dec. 24, 2015.
He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1942. Enlisting in the U.S. Navy after graduation, Wally served aboard the USS Savannah during World War II. He retired from the Rock Island Fire Department as a Captain in 1976. Wally later retired from Augustana College, where he worked in the maintenance department.
Wally was a member of the Rock Island Retired Firefighters Association, Moline American Legion Post 246 and Rock Island VFW Post 1303. He enjoyed gardening and making salsa.
Survivors include his sons, David (Susie) Lund, Milan, Charles (Cheryl) Seyb, Rock Island, Daniel (Jolene) Seyb, Fountain Hills, Arizona, and James (Rebecca) Seyb, Fountain Hills; daughter, Suzan Johnson, Phoenix, Arizona; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; two grandchildren; brothers: Russell and Roland Seyb; and sister, Marilyn Winger.
