A Rock Island police officer is on administrative leave after a fatal shooting Thursday night. Police received several reports of shots fired shortly before 11 p.m. in the vicinity of 12th Street and 10th Avenue.

Police say arriving officers engaged in a foot pursuit with an individual that was observed to be armed with a handgun.

At about 12th Street and Glenhurst Court, an officer confronted the suspect and subsequently discharged his firearm, striking the suspect, according to a news release from Jason Foy, deputy chief of the Rock Island Police Department.

The victim was transported by ambulance to Unity Point where he was later pronounced dead.

The Rock Island County Integrity Task Force has been activated and will be conducting an investigation into the shooting.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave per department protocol.

These last few comments are so immature... police do what is necessary. I am so tired of these no nothing's who have not left their armchairs in years in years second guessing trained officers.

way 2 go, are you sure the suspect didn't have his hands up, a la Michael Brown? The "news" as in media, has not stated how many times the suspect had been shot or what part of the body was struck by the bullets, because that information was not released by the Coroner or any law enforcement agency. Also, a fleeing felon CAN be shot, especially, a fleeing felon with a firearm. Secondly, the idea of shooting to wound or incapacitate is moronic, at best. Only in the movies and television, and that's unbelievable then too.

Just heard on the news that the perp was shot in the back and the officer approached and shot him "again" in the back. If the guy was running away the cop should have been a good enough shot to wing him in the legs. If the perp was facing the cop then shoot to kill. This is good justifacation for body cams.

My prayers go out to the officer, his or her family, and the family of the deceased. Thank you, Officer for doing your job to keep the rest of us safe.

You know what is coming next. The people who hate gun rights will find a way to defend this guy threatening an officer with his somehow, and it will be the usual idiocy from the left. When we deputize someone we have an obligation to surrender quietly when he makes an arrest. If he sees a gun come out you can't blame him for shooting.

Don't be ridiculous. I am willing to bet money the officer was justified in what he did. He is under no obligation to allow himself to be shot by some jerk with a gun. You have such a simple mind. No ability to think with any complexity at all. Everything with you is either black or white. You must live a very limited mental life.

A hard road to walk down!

A young man shooting and then fleeing, with the weapon still in hand, through the neighborhoods on the west end of RI. Terrorizing the citizens, and the police officers who responded to this call for help. I'm sure this is not the first time people in this part of the city have experienced this scenario. Sad for the deceased young man, sad for the officer who now has to live with this the rest of his life, and even more sad for the good people of that part of the city who have to live with this kinda sh*t almost every day.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the officer, his family, and the family of the deceased. No cop ever wants to have to take a life, however he understands it might become necessary at some point.

Difficult job, officer. Bless you for your service. Most importantly, YOU went home to your family tonight.
