After several delays, Center Ice at Bass Street Landing — Moline’s new outdoor ice rink — opened Saturday.
Located at the foot of 17th Street near Kone Centre, the rink initially was to open a week ago. But the ice did not freeze as fast as expected during setup. The setup crew located a new chiller, the equipment that cools the fluid that runs through pipes that freeze the ice. But in changing out one chiller with another, they lost a couple inches of ice — delaying the opening again.
While they had enough ice as of Wednesday, the surface was too hard to make the final preparations with a Zamboni machine. That process — applying a final coat of hot water, which freezes faster — succeeded Saturday morning, and the smooth surface was achieved.
Capacity is 200 skaters at a time.
Cost for a 90-minute session is $5, or $8 with skate rental.
Today’s hours will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Other hours of operation and more information is available by calling 309-517-1930 or online at CenterIce-BassStreet.com.
