The Friends of Dan Nagle Walnut Grove Pioneer Village is looking for people to become an apprentice craft demonstrator working alongside a village “master” to learn crafts to demonstrate at events or tours.

Patterned after the apprenticeships of the 1800s, training and supplies will be free provided the volunteer agrees to participate in at least four days at village events or tours.

The goal is to learn a craft well enough to assist a village master or become a master craft demonstrator for village events. The time needed depends on the craft chosen. Most sessions are held Saturdays in the spring at the village.

Apprentice opportunities include black iron cooking, hand quilting, penny rug making, blacksmithing, basket weaving, knitting with hand spun yarn, basket weaving, paper bead making, leather crafting and lye soap making.

To sign up, call 563-328-3283 or email deborah.leistikow@scottcountyiowa.com.

Village events calendar includes Heritage Days, May 26-27; Village Alive, July 28; Fall Festival, Sept. 1-2; and the Christmas Walk, Dec. 1, as well as school and other tours during the year.
