A reception to honor retiring Moline Mayor Don Welvaert will be held from 2-6 p.m. today in council chambers at Moline City Hall, 619 16th St.

Welvaert served two terms as mayor and previously was a city alderman.

Major achievements during his tenure as mayor were the expansion of Western Illinois University Quad-Cities Riverfront Campus,  construction of the Kone Centre tower along the riverfront and the new police facility.

Newly elected mayor Scott Raes will be sworn in May 7.

Clinton raises flood gates

The flood gates at 9th Avenue North will be installed today along the Mississippi River in Clinton.

The river at the nearest measuring station in Fulton, Ill., is predicted to make a slight rise through the weekend, depending on rainfall in the area and snowmelt upriver. Flood stage at Fulton is 16 feet, with a level of 13.8 feet predicted by Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
