Volunteers from the American Red Cross Gateway Area Chapter were on the scene Sunday to help after a house fire shortly before 1 p.m. in the 4300 block of 135th Street in Clinton.

"The home was destroyed," said Kasey Kelly, regional communications manager for the Red Cross. The Red Cross put up two children and two adults in a hotel for shelter and provided them with clothing and food, she said.

Firefighters from several local agencies were on hand to battle the blaze.

Volunteers were members of the chapter’s Disaster Action Team, a specially trained crew that responds to the scene of a local disaster when called upon at any time of the day or night, Kelly said.

Between July 1, 2012, and May 31, 2013, the American Red Cross Gateway Area Chapter assisted 17 families after a disaster, Kelly said. Last fiscal year, the Red Cross assisted 25 families.
