Update: The boil advisory in Rock Island has been lifted.

Parts of Rock Island under water boil advisory

Rock Island has issued a boil advisory effective immediately for the area of 7th Avenue south to the Rock River and from 11th Street east to the Moline border.

Public Works Director Randall Tweet said the Rock Island Water Treatment Plant experienced an unexpected drop in system pressure this morning, likely because of numerous water main breaks.

As a result, Tweet said he cannot guarantee the distribution system maintained the minimum pressure of 20 pounds per square inch.

All water used for drinking and cooking should be boiled until further notice, Tweet said. The advisory should be lifted in 24 hours. Tweet said the advisory is just a precaution and there are no indications the water is unsafe for consumption.

Several Rock Island school are affected by the boil order: the Rock Island Academy, Rock Island Center for Math & Science, Longfellow Liberal Arts, Denkmann, Eugene Field, Washington and Rock Island High School.

District officials said bottled water available at the buildings in the morning for students and staff to drink. Friday is a half-day for the elementary schools, and there is no school for the junior high and senior high school.
