SCC honors graduates today

Scott Community College's commencement ceremony for its 1,040 graduates will be 6 p.m. today at the Davenport RiverCenter. Speakers will be 2013 graduate Nick Bruns and alumnus Ebony Imani Rivers.

Rivers is a tri-brand manager at Enterprise Holdings Co. at the Cedar Rapids Airport and is involved with community youth organizations in eastern Iowa. She earned an associate degree from SCC, then a bachelor's degree from Augustana College, Rock Island. Bruns, a five-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps who was deployed to Afghanistan, will graduate with an associate in arts degree then transfer to a four-year university to study nursing. He helped develop the college's Student Veterans Organization.

 Among the graduates, 31 students earned summa cum laude honors for a 4.0 GPA, 131 earned magna cum laude for 3.75 or higher GPA and 110 students will graduate cum laude with a 3.5 or higher GPA.

Karpeles Museum opens Freud exhibit

Psychologist Sigmund Freud is the subject of the newest exhibit at the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum in Rock Island. The exhibit will be featured through August at the museum at 700 22nd St. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Learn about Hampton in 1838

To celebrate Hampton's 175th anniversary, Dr. Stephen Warren of Augustana College will speak to the Hampton Historical Society about the United States and the State of Illinois in 1838. The meeting takes place at 7 p.m. today at the Hampton Methodist Church, 400 2nd Ave., Hampton. The program will also offer a brief look at Hampton 175 years ago. Refreshments will be served.
