UPDATE: The suspect has been identified as Charles S. Johnston, 60, of Belvidere, Illinois. He is charged with attempted murder, a Class B felony, and assault on persons in certain occupations, a Class D felony.

According to an arrest affidavit filed in Cedar County, an officer responded at 2:48 p.m. Thursday to the Pilot Travel Center for a report of an active shooter.

The officer located the suspect vehicle, a black Volkswagen, and approached it. Johnson pointed his gun at the officer and fired it, according to the affidavit.

The officer returned fire, according to the affidavit.

EARLIER REPORT: MUSCATINE — One suspect is in custody after a shots-fired incident on Interstate 80 near a gas station by the Atalissa exit Thursday afternoon, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

Around 2:30 p.m., Trooper Dan Loussaert said the state patrol and local law enforcement agencies responded to the scene. A spokesperson at the state patrol office said a person was reportedly shooting in the direction of the interstate.

The exit was temporarily blocked and traffic on east and westbound lanes was slowed due to the incident, according to the state patrol's office.

Troopers encountered the suspect on County RD X46 where they engaged him and exchanged gunfire. After a brief stand-off Troopers/Officers were able to take the suspect into custody.

No injuries were sustained by the suspect or law enforcement.

The Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating as a result of officers involved in the shooting. The Officers involved and the suspect's name will not be released at this time.
