After more than 50 years in the same spot, the landmark Tastee Freez at 3950 Rockingham Road in Davenport has closed, a company official confirmed Friday.
But whether the building's owner elects to sell or tear down the building is unknown. Signage has been removed from the outside of the building.
The owner, Tara Kirschenmann of Moline, could not be reached by the Quad-City Times for comment Friday.
Tom Amberger, vice president of marketing for the Galardi Group, the Irvine, Calif.-based parent company for 60 Tastee Freez franchisee stores, confirmed that Kirschenmann had closed the store, although he offered few details.
"Our franchise area director said she had been there for like 30 years," Amberger said.
Tastee Freez, which originated in the early 1950s, serves drive-in food such ice cream sundaes and cones, root beer floats, hamburgers, fries and malts.
According to www.tastee-freez.com, the franchise was the last one in Iowa.
Tthe closest Tastee Freez to the Quad-Cities now is in Spring Valley, Ill., about 70 miles east on Interstate 80.
